The new comprehensive plate range from United Shield comprises nine different plates, each with its own unique construction and characteristics.
The plates are offered as either combination plates (CP), to be used in conjunction with soft armour vests, or stand alone plates (SAP) to be used in isolation.
The plates follow the US NIJ Norm 0101.04 which defines the protection afforded by each plate.
In recent years new ammunition has appeared which is not covered by the NIJ protocol, hence Levels described as NIJ Level III+ and NIJ Level III++. These 'unofficial' levels have fallen into common usage and are recognised as follows:-
NIJ Level III+
Ammunition, velocities and test methodology as defined by the NIJ but also including 7.62 x 39mm Mild Steel Core (AK47) ammunition.
NIJ Level III++
As above but also including the 5.56 x 45mm SS109 ammunition.
